The Story so far

Marlon King (Left) and Nick Hannon (Right)

Sons of Alpha Centauri began on the hottest day of July, 2001 when Nick Hannon (bass) and Marlon King (guitars) dedicated themselves to music after working on a series of projects from 1996 – 2000. They decided that the evolution of the project would be organic, expansive and conceptual. The first 25 tracks (numbered chronologically) were written by the duo from 2001 – 2004.

Stevie B. (Left) and Andy Blake (Right)

Stevie B. has a spiritual feel to his presence, which reflected in his hard rock drumming and life style. He gravitated toward the project in early 2004.

The withdrawn textual ambient work of Blake naturally completed the line up in spring, following which, a limited two track demo was self recorded and distributed later that year.

Lightshows

A series of intense music, light and laser shows began in 2005. The band delivered a sound cloud of styles from classic rock to avant-garde metal with vast electronic soundscapes driving a unique hypnotic harmonic pulse which resonated through beneath the guitars.

Later that year P.E.A.R.L began their experimental projects with friends from "Godspeed You! Black Emperor".

Conceptual Artwork inspired by the band for the band

In 2006 visual components began to take form such as landscape photography. Design elements were personally undertaken along with the hand crafting of all promo records, demos and vinyl. Industrial artwork for the SOAC project began development by collaborators Seldon Hunt and Ben Brown while the band themselves were being heavily influenced by their maritime surroundings.

SOAC surpassed 35 tracks in their chronology and released the debut album wordlwide on Sound Devastation Records in November 2007. The 68-minute 12-track was mastered by James Plotkin and pressed on a deluxe six panel digipak with Braille stamping and foil UV gloss inks. 300 limited edition hand crafted PR copies were also made available.

Yawning Sons

In 2008, a trilogy of musical collaborations were initiated. The first was with legendary desert instrumentalists "Yawning Man" to form "Yawning Sons". This psychedelic, ambient drone rock trans-Atlantic alliance included vocals from members of the Desert Sessions, Kyuss and QOTSA. Deluxe PR copies featuring alternative landscape photos were also released in coordination with Lexicon Devil Records.

Sons of Alpha Centauri and Treasure Cat Split Album: Last Day of Summer

The second collaboration featured members of riff rock powerhouse "Karma to Burn" and their new West Virginian incarnation "Treasure Cat". The punishing and explosive 11-track "Last Day of Summer" was released worldwide on "Underdogma Records" in August 2009. Exclusive PR copies were designed and crafted by the band with alternative artwork from Jimbo Valentine.

Sons of Alpha Centauri - Ambient Visions

The final collaboration of 2009 was delivered by SOAC alter-ego "Ambient Visions" with all 88 copies hand build by 'Simple Box Construction' using cedar wood. The release was very low profile and after superb reviews is now near impossible to find. Shortly after this release SOAC founded CAOS Industries.

In 2010 Ben Brown returned to the band having developed the accompanying visual sets for SOAC live performance over a three year period. He featured "Washed in with the Tide" at the Royal Academy of Arts in 2007 and debuted the intense visuals performance at the October London show with "A Storm of Light" in October 2010.

In 2011 "Sons of Alpha Centauri" will begin composing and recording tracks for the anticipated release follow up to their 2007 debut album and will be entering pre-production in the spring. 2011 will also see the special release of the third entry in the vinyl trilogy for the 10th Anniversary of the bands founding.

Sons of Alpha Centauri

After 10 years the band continues to be a withdrawn and intrinsically focused art and music collective. SOAC would like to thank you for your interest and continued support. All comments, questions or queries posted through this website are welcomed and will be responded to.
